While out campaigning it is interesting to hear how the former YMCA pool can be opened in a month for a cost of $100,00.00 WOW! What a bargain.
As a Councillor for the Municipality of Yarmouth representing District 6 and speaking with fellow Councillors which two of them set on the Bridge Financing Committee for the YMCA, I or my colleagues neither ever heard of such a number. Actually our Council has never been given an actual estimate for renovation work to this building.
Some numbers of a $1 Million to $1.5 Million have been circulating and I have heard through the grapevine that a request for $1.5 Million from the Province was turned down. Not sure if this is fact or not but people interested in opening the former YMCA should ask the present owners.
As for funding programs at the old YMCA to my knowledge I am not aware of any dollar number or what programs would be offered. If an estimated cost for renovations was known and an estimate of cost to run programs, I then would be able to discuss funding with my fellow Councillors for a legitimate decision.
To blame the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth demonstrates the lack of trust and transparency by others. This is my opinion only, if I am wrong I will apologize, but if someone could actually show me estimated cost for renovations, cost for programming, timelines for completion and intergovernmental funding, until then how can I as a representative on Council for District 6 make a conscientious decision to spend tax payer dollars?
I believe this is a honest question for me to ask on behalf of the hard working residents of District 6 and the Municipality of Yarmouth on how we as Council spend your tax payer dollar.
